The annual grid carbon intensity in the Midlands area is suspected to be the highest in Great Britain, due to the preponderance of coal and gas fired conventional plant in the area, and the limited contribution of renewable generation.

Several Carbon Dioxide (CO2) allocation methods have been developed, but not all can analyse carbon intensity variations from the national levels through to local levels.

This project aims to identify a suitable method to understand the background changes in carbon intensity in the Midlands area and provide a tool for analysing the effects of individual carbon reduction projects.

The purpose of this work was to establish and demonstrate a method for analysing carbon intensity variations on a national, regional and local level.
