Power Line Carrier (PLC) technology has the potential to enhance distribution low voltage network applications and could become an integral part of future smart grid technology. As a communications medium it has several advantages over other mediums:

  • Lowest operational cost and lowest power consumption.

  • Intrinsically knows electrical network connectivity model (even to phase connection detail). This feature could be critical for smart grid applications

  • Less susceptible to third party interference

  • Not limited by poor reception areas.

However, although PLC has been proven as a technology and there are applications throughout Europe and USA, little is known about its limitations on UK distribution networks.

This demonstration will determine PLC performance on a typical urban GB network with varying loads and noise floors. It will also look at some of the practical and physical challenges of widespread deployment and the technical developments that may be required to address these.

Assessment of Power Line Carrier technology on a typical urban low voltage network to quantify the technologys opportunities and limitations.
