This project was initiated in 2006 to identify ways that excavated ground works material, resulting from jointing, maintenance and new construction could be recycled. With increasing pressures on landfill use, the project investigated and implemented changes in the management and reuse of excavated materials by UKPN to reduce tonnage of material sent to landfill each year.

A second phase of the project concentrated on sustainable working practices. By taking a holistic view of streetworks activities Phase 2 delivered a tool that determines the most sustainable approach to the task.

Phase 1 of this project demonstrated that excavated materials could be recycled at one of several recycling facilities in the UK to meet Highways Authority requirements. The recycled materials can be classed as replacement type 1 material and can be used to backfill streetworks.

The Carbon Calculator developed in Phase 2 delivered a tool based on the PAS 2050 standard and it can be used to take a holistic view of planned work. The tool aims to determine the most sustainable method of work on a job by job basis, and has the aims of implementing sustainable working and overall reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.
