Cyclic and emergency ratings of power transformers which form an important consideration regarding reinforcement decisions.
UKPN currently models cyclic ratings and emergency ratings of power transformers by using a method based on formulae described in the standards document CP1010 / BS7735 (A Loading Guide For Oil Immersed Transformers). This model allows the load related risk on a substation to be quantified in order to prioritise network reinforcement expenditure. The model predicts the temperature rise within the transformer, in order to determine a maximum rating on a daily basis which each transformer can sustain.

It has become apparent by comparing the output of the UKPNs model with the temperatures observed in practice, that there are some differences. The main causes for differences in modelled and observed temperature are over-simplifications of the model, and the absence of effective data for transformer and heat exchanger parameters
