UKPN holds information on the location of its network assets in a Geological Information System (GIS) called NetMAP. It is the primary asset register for the UKPN cable and overhead line network, and provides location details for the rest of the Network assets. NetMAP holds geospatial information for all three licence (EPN, SPN and LPN) areas and is one of the four core systems used within UK Power Networks. In SPN the data is held as vector [digitised format]. However both LPN and EPN hold the data as a combination of vector and raster (photographic images).

A Proof of Concept (PoC) was undertaken to see if it was possible to utilise a number of external, disparate data sources [Inspection data, Non geographic asset records, LIDAR measurements and aerial photography] to improve the records in NetMAP. The PoC proved that this was possible with the development of a semi automated tool that would pull the suitable data sources into NetMAP, and allow the users, Network Records staff, to decide which pieces of data should be combined to create a composite vectorised record containing the best representation of the asset.

The proof of concept is developing the following techniques:

  • The intelligent and accelerated conversion of the HV and EHV overhead network for Luton, Stevenage and Hemel Hempstead

  • The approach also ensures, where possible, that the Ellipse ID is populated in each object thereby linking NetMAP to Ellipse (the UKPN Asset Register)

  • This also enabled the development of a tool to link Ellipse to NetMAP.
