Energy Storage and Demand Response
It is unlikely that a generic definition of the term smart grid will ever be agreed but the implications for GB Distribution Networks are becoming clearer, it is the requirement to increase the level of system automation to facilitate more Demand Side Management (DSM) and the integration of domestic renewable energy generation on a large scale.

It is clear that the scale of Ofgems ambition for the migration to low carbon distribution networks, will need to be matched by significant investment and to ensure ENWL are investigating all potential opportunities, a number of small scoping studies were initiated to cover a range of probable scenarios according to the available funding.

This project was initiated ahead of Ofgems announcement of the Low Carbon Network Fund when the discussion was around defining the smart grid and the technical and economic drivers associated.
