Technical and practical evaluation of a surveying system, previously used in the United States, to detect the presence of voltages on metallic street furniture and DNO apparatus installed in the public highway.

The aim of this project is to prevent members of the public being exposed to electrical voltages that have the potential to cause them harm.

An evaluation of the system’s potential to provide an innovative and cost effective method for determining the condition of buried underground cable and associated plant, including the identification of any defects present, will also be undertaken.

The project aims to address potential issues in the safety of operating a distribution network, from the exposure of the public and UK Power Networks personnel to potentially hazardous contact voltages present on street furniture.

Additionally, the project will look to improve the knowledge of asset condition, via the detection of defects on distribution network underground assets.

This will be achieved from the evaluation of technology and working methods not previously used in the United Kingdom.
