Substations are critical to the successful operation of the distribution network. SPD maintains thousands of substations as part of the network, ranging in type, age and construction quality. Energy efficiency has been low priority in the past; however, the drive for carbon reductions and current high operating costs of substations means that there is a need to find energy efficiency savings for substations.

Trials of energy efficiency solutions and approaches will be carried out at 10 selected primary substations with the aim of reducing the energy demand in substations.

10 Primary substations will be selected to carry out live trials; careful consideration will be made at the selection stage to ensure that sites will be suitable and secure.

  • 5kW ASHP installed at 2 sites

  • 4kW PV with battery storage installation at 2 sites

  • Modern electric heating devices at 2 sites

  • PCM Thermal Accumulator (Green structures) at 1 site

  • Eltek Online Monitoring and actuation x 3 sites.
£3-4 million a year spent on heating in SPD against £800k spent in Manweb which has more substations installed in the network.

Providing heating and lighting for substations on the network is expensive and there are issues such as overheating being reported. This project seeks to quantify and find measures to reduce energy usage in SPEN substation estate. This will be achieved through environmental monitoring and metering of substations and through trialling innovative energy efficiency solutions that can be employed to reduce energy requirements of substations.
