This project addresses the emerging solution of wide area monitoring, protection and control systems focusing on the technologies, communications architecture and end user applications. This technology could address the growing uncertainties and dynamics posed by the evolution and development of the UK Transmission Network, particularly with respect to system development and performance and secure operation.
The key objective of the 1st stage of this project is to evaluate the technology, interoperability and application of Phasor Measurement Units. This will involve laboratory scenario testing and deployment on Transmission systems to baseline and track current and emerging network stability issues. The work is collaborative and shared with Scottish Power, Scottish and Southern Electricity, Northern Ireland Electricity and ESBI (Ireland). Units will be deployed across to collect data for research purposes and validated against systems models. The work will support the development of next generation data and communications infrastructure.
