Introduction:
The manufacturers claim that the Collapse Prediction Relay Device (CPRD) is able to predict a forthcoming transmission system collapse at an early opportunity. Using only local voltage inputs the relay uses a number of techniques to assess the stability of the transmission system. If the device were proven to operate successfully it would have the potential to predict a blackout at an early stage and enable corrective action to be taken.
Objectives:
The project will evaluate a new type of protection relay which is claimed by the manufacturers to be able to predict a possible transmission power system collapse at an early opportunity. The CPRD relay was assessed in a laboratory at the University of Manchester and whilst installed at suitable location on the GB electricity transmission system.
