Electricity North West owns, operates and maintains the North West’s electricity distribution network, connecting 2.4 million properties, and more than 5 million people in the region to the National Grid.

We own one of the original 14 regulated electricity distribution networks in England, Wales and Scotland and are regulated by Ofgem - the Office of the gas and electricity markets.

Our network covers a diverse range of terrain, from isolated farms in rural areas such as Cumbria, to areas of heavy industry and urban populations including Manchester.

National Grid are an international electricity and gas company based in the UK and northeastern US. We play a vital role in connecting millions of people safely, reliably and efficiently to the energy they use.

National Grid Electricity has two roles in the United Kingdom:

Electricity transmission owner
We own the electricity transmission system in England and Wales. Our electricity assets comprise approximately 7,200 kilometres of overhead line, about 690 kilometres of underground cable and 337 substations at 241 sites.

Electricity system operator
We are the Great Britain System Operator, responsible for managing the operations of both the England and Wales transmission system that we own and also the two high voltage electricity transmission networks in Scotland. Day-to-day operation of the Great Britain electricity transmission system involves the continuous real-time matching of demand and generation output, ensuring the stability and security of the power system and the maintenance of satisfactory voltage and frequency. We are also designated as system operator for the new offshore electricity transmission regime.

In the UK, gas leaves the transmission system and enters the distribution networks at high pressure. It is then transported through a number of reducing pressure tiers until it is finally delivered to consumers. There are eight regional distribution networks, four of which are owned by National Grid. Our UK distribution networks deliver gas to around 10.9 million consumers.

We deliver gas to 2.7 million homes and businesses in the North East, Northern Cumbria and much of Yorkshire.

We don’t generate the gas, we transport it, through a vast network of underground pipes. During periods of peak demand, we transport four times as much energy as the electricity networks.

If you spot our engineers when you are out and about, chances are they are either replacing old gas mains with modern new ones (we’re putting more than 3,800 kilometres of new pipes in the ground by 2021) or carrying out emergency repairs.

As well as keeping our network in tip top condition, we also provide the region’s rapid response service for customers who smell gas at home or work.

If you smell gas, call the National Gas Emergency Line on 0800 111 999. One of our engineers will be out with you quickly, to keep you safe.

Every day at Wales & West Utilities, our team of more than 1,300 skilled and dedicated colleagues do their very best to keep our 7.5 million customers safe and warm, with gas connections and a gas supply they can rely on combined with a level of service they can trust.

We don’t sell gas; instead we use our extensive pipeline to transport gas to homes and businesses throughout Wales and the south west of England. This involves maintaining and replacing our gas pipe network, connecting new properties and responding to customer gas emergencies.

We launched Wales & West Utilities in 2005, and since then we have worked hard to build our impressive and established reputation for delivering excellent customer service with safety, reliability and value for money at the heart of everything we do.

We are there for our customers 24 hours a day, 365 days a year – it’s a vital service and one that we are extremely proud to deliver.

Where we work – Gas Connections & Gas Pipe Replacement
We own and maintain more than 35,000 kilometres of gas pipes – enough to stretch from the UK to New Zealand and back again! Using those pipes – most of which lie hidden beneath your feet - we supply gas to around 2.5 million households and businesses, with a population of 7.5 million people. We cover an area that stretches from the mountains of North Wales to the cliff tops of Cornwall. The regions we serve are a mixture of cities, towns, villages and open countryside. Of course we’re biased, but we think they're some of the most beautiful places in the world.
